The Mount Moorosi Region is situated in Southern Lesotho and offers new and
exciting places to visit. The newly built tar road that connects Qachas Nek
in the East to Maseru in the South Western part means that all vehicles are
able to visit the area.
The best accommodation in the area is at Moorosi Chalets where you can
overnight in ensuite Rondavels or basic basotho huts. There are guided
hikes to the top of the famous "Thaba Moorosi" where Chief Moorosi resisted
British Rule and sent all his subjects up to top where he held out from
British forces for 9 months in 1879. The area is full of Bushman Painting
sites and from a study done in the eighties there have been more than 100
cave painting sites up the Quthing River Valley Alone.
This region is far more dramatic than the other parts of Lesotho as the
Senqu River winds its way down from the North. As you drive from Qachas Nek
to Mount Moorosi you drop down and hug the Senqu and climb to well over
2400 metres. The river valleys - The Ketane River Valley, Sebapala River
Valley, Maletsenayane River Valley and Quthing River Valley that meet up
with the Senqu are all very impressive and worth exploring.
The upper reaches of the Quthing River valley boast the unexplored Majoana
Mabeli Waterfall with its colony of Cape Vultures nesting in its cliffs and
the high altitude Lake Letsie about 2400 metres above sea level.
The Sebapala River Valley offers an incredibly scenic drive on good gravel
for 50km from the Chalets with incredibly steep ascents and descents. At the end of the road
you find yourself in the most Southerly tourist destination at the village
of Ha Liphapang where you can take part in a pony trek or hike to Lesotho's
finest set of Bushman Paintings, trout fish and stay over in stunning
Basotho huts which have been allocated to tourists.
If you take a drive up the Ketane River Valley for about 50km from the
Moorosi Chalets you will also get to the end of the road where you can
explore the impressive sandstone formations. The relatively unkwown Ketane
Waterfall can be viewed a few hours hike from where you leave the vehicle.
The Senqu River Valley itself offers some incredible view points which are
accessible by vehicle or foot - the most impressive of these is the Christ
the King Viewpoint where you gaze upon an incredible view of a horse shoe
bend of the Senqu River. |
