Qachas Nek has recently had the main tar road connected to it from
Maseru. This means that a two-wheel drive vehicle can drive on on one
of the most scenic drives in Lesotho from the east all the way to
Maseru. It's a beautiful, undulating drive, among the loveliest in
Lesotho. Named after chief Moorosi's son Ncatya, Qacha's Nek was an
area famed for its banditry when the British founded the town in 1888
in an attempt to forestall the kind of trouble they'd experienced with
Chief Moorosi. |

Sehlabathebe National Park, the oldest nature reserve in the
country, is remote and almost inaccessible, but predictably peaceful
and stunningly beautiful. Set on the border with South Africa in the
southern reaches of the Drakensberg at an average altitude of 2400m,
the park is best known for its prolific birdlife, including the rare
bearded vulture (or lammergeier), excellent trout fishing on the
Tsoelikana River, waterfalls, rock paintings and ancient Basotho stone
dwellings, and seemingly endless open spaces just perfect for hiking. |

Oxbow is one of the few places in Africa where snow skiing is possible,
although the quality of the snow depends of the vagaries of the weather

Katse Dam, centrepiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a fine
piece of engineering. The flooded valleys of the dam extend for 45km
and the dam wall is 185m high. The dam is second in size in Africa only
to the Lake Volta Akosombo Dam in Ghana.
The surrounding scenery is magnificent. The dam does not detract from
the magnificent panoramas, and is often of great interest to visitors.

Sani Pass is a route that connects Kwazulu-Natal and Lesotho. It is
a notoriously dangerous road, which requires the use of a 4x4 vehicle
and above average driving experience. It has occasional remains of
vehicles that did not succeed in navigating its steep gradients and
poor traction surfaces, and has a catalogue of frightening stories of
failed attempts at ascending the path over the Northern Lesotho
mountains. |
